Extra: 343 meters per second
Silvestrovo or one small piece of levity as we wait to ring in the new year
Hi and thanks for subscribing to my newsletter! The breakdown: first a personal essay then some thoughts on my recent work, things I am reading, writing and listening to and finally some recipes or recipe recommendations. Feel free to skip to whatever interests you. Please do also hit reply at any time, for any purpose - these are odd times and I want to offer as much connection and support as I can. Find me on Twitter and Instagram too.
Programming note: Life has been a bit overwhelming recently so Ultracold has temporarily moved to a monthly schedule. My apologies!
EXTRA: 343 METERS PER SECOND*
One small piece of levity as we wait to ring in the new year. “Silvestrovo” or Silvester’s Day is a name given to December 31st in Croatia. It has nothing to do with Looney Tunes or my husband’s dislike of Tweety Bird.
Wishing you all the best,
Karmela
*343 meters per second (or 761 miles per hour) is the speed of sound in dry air at temperature of 20C. This is about three times as fast as a falcon diving for its prey. The speed of sound - the speed at which the particles that make up air execute something like the motion of a compressed slinky that shrinks then expands - changes as temperature or humidity of air change.
