I skipped this one because I want to wait til I'm done with Trauma Plot (I started during peak semester stress and knew I had to wait/my body was too underresourced). Anyway, I'm still saving that part, but I scrolled ahead and I am feeling so warm about the Croatia coffee talk! Pretty much *exactly* two years ago I was with P's Croatian friends drinking this exact coffee and reading fortunes in the sludge, while Eurovision played in the background. <3 So grateful for this cultural sharing you offer, and feel lucky that I got to experience it.

Ah, I’d be curious about what you make of Trauma Plot though it’s for sure not a read for a stressful time. And wow, Croatian friends! I’m glad we have this experience in common, it’s all very dear to me. I’ve not watched Eurovision in ages but when I was a teenager it really was like the Oscars or something of that scope for everyone back home

So glad someone is writing about time-sense in her work, it's deftly done and deep! First batch of reviews didn't fully attest to how important her book is.

I loved reading about your coffee ritual so much. It reminded me of how much I love making/drinking coffee from the mokapot, and that so much of why I love it isn't necessarily about the coffee itself. It's less about the coffee and more about the comfort of the ritual that's been performed through generations of family; the movements and scents and steps are a way that I can feel my Italian family with me when they're not, of bringing back just for now memories and moments spent with them. Thank you for how beautifully you wrote this, and for sharing your coffee-making routine

Thanks Kelly! What you write about the mokapot really resonates - there’s so much value in this kind of ritual

Trauma Plot… omg, the story it tells, and then your story of the book — astonishing both

Coffee rituals, Croatian culture, your roots in that… it was really lovely to read

I have never been a coffee drinker… for me, growing up in an Irish family, it was tea and all the rituals around making and drinking it … like the gathering of the women in the family - my mom, four aunties and gran - in the house that aunties and gran shared, sitting around the big dining room tabke after they got home from work, a steaming pot of tea in the center, sharing their stories from the day, with 9 year-old me home from school and listening intently, having a cuppa too
